Product barcodes are read by barcode scanners in more everyday situations than most of us realize. One of the most familiar uses of this technology is with barcodes on product packages at grocery stores. When we buy something a bar code scanner scans and reads the barcodes on each package. Product information such as product name and unit cost is automatically read and processed by the stock control system. A short description and the amount of each item is automatically added to your bill as each new item is scanned.
When the stock control system tallies a purchase, no matter what is actually sold, the inventory records in the central database are simultaneously modified to record the fact that the item has been purchased. If your inventory information was correctly entered into the system when you set it up, inventory control occurs without the need for manual counting or recording of purchases.
In a small business setting implementing such a system starts with stock control software where information about inventory items is stored. Bar code scanners are used to input data into the stock control system. Each time an item passes in or out of inventory it is scanned and the appropriate change of status is recorded in the inventory database.
It is important that each item has its own unique bar code. Items that don’t already have a bar code can have a unique one generated for them by the stock control software. You then use a bar code printer to print out the code which can then be attached to the item.
These are the top three kinds of bar code scanners that are used today:
1. The Wand Scanner - The most basic type of bar code scanner is the “wand”. This is a pen-type scanner that needs to be kept in contact with the bar code when scanning it. The wand emits a light which is reflected off the bar code and then decoded by the system to identify the item.
It is necessary to keep a wand scanner in touch with the UPC code while scanning it. The wand scanner, which is a pen-like scanner, is the simplest type of UPC scanner. It gives off a light that reflects off the UPC code, which in turn is decoded by the POS system to recognize the product.
There are limitations to wand scanners, however. The wand needs to be held at a fairly specific angle when pointed at the barcode in order for it to scan properly. Also, the speed with which it is moved across the barcode can’t be too fast or too slow. Additionally, there is a limit to the resolution of every barcode wand scanner. The scanner will not be able to read properly any barcode that has a resolution that is significantly smaller than the scanner itself. For example, a 5 mil barcode cannot be read using a 10 mil wand. When in the market for a wand scanner, it is important that this isn’t forgotten.
2. The CCD Scanner - CCD (charged coupled device) technology is the next least expensive bar code scanning system. Like the wand scanner, CCD readers must be in direct contact with the bar code label in order to read it. But unlike the wand, there is no need to move the device across the label. The operator simply presses the reader against the label and pulls the trigger. The bar code is then photographed, digitized and decoded by the system.
Of all the different types of bar code scanners, CCD readers are considered the most straight-forward to use. They are manufactured in widths that start at about 2 and go up to 4 inches. A CCD reader is expensive compared to a wand (about four times the cost), but is a bargain compared to the laser scanner (about one third the cost).
Fixed Focus Optics, or FFO, is another interesting new technology that resembles CCD. These scanners can read bar codes from 20 inches away because they don’t require contact with the bar code. They also have the ability to read two-dimensional bar codes, which are being implemented in more installations.
3. Laser Scanners - A beam of light is used by a laser scanner in order to scan the bar code label. Instead of moving the scanner you move the bar code across the scanner. The scanner does not have to actually touch the bar code label in order to read it. The scanner will automatically read the scan whenever a bar code is held in front of it.
This system is widely used in many different types of installations. Scanning is such a quick process that it ss even possible to insert laser scanners directly into conveyor systems. As objects move along the conveyor, they are automatically scanned and recorded. You see this in grocery stores, where the cashier simply moves the items over the scanner to scan them. This type of system is quick enough to keep up with even the fastest motion of a cashier, and it is quicker and far more accurate than any other alternative system that could be used.
No matter what your ideal scanning system might be today, you need to make certain that you buy a stock control system that allows you to take advantage of future developments in bar code technology. This will allow you to keep your system updated without having to replace the entire system in the future.

There are actually no margin requirements if you want to buy an option because your risk is restricted to the price of the option. In contrast, option sellers obtain a credit in their account for selling an option and also get to keep this amount if the option expires worthless.
However, those selling option are required to put (buy) or call (sell) if the option they have is indeed excercised by the holder who is allocated the option. Therefore, to sell an option, one must have a significant margin. Option trading requires that one is knowledgeable about the terminology of option transactions.
Strike price is the value at which an underlying stock can be bought or sold if a stock option is exercised. Several strike prices above and below of the current price of an underlying asset are possible at an option. Strike price interval for stocks valued below $25 is generally 2 1/2 dollar. Stocks over a value of $25 have a $5 interval.
Expiration date means the day the option closes. Options generally expire at the end of the business day on the third Friday of the month of expiration. Every listed option has an option that can be accessed for this current month plus the following month plus any specified month in the future. Similarly, every stock has the exact same monthly cycle in which options are recommended. Usually there’s 3 fixed expiring cycles on tap. Plus all cycles are required to have four month intervals. The MACD (which stands for Moving Average Convergence or Divergence) is, in fact, an indication of technical analysis.
There are two opposite ways to do option trading: calls and puts. A call option is essentially the right to purchase the underlying asset at a specific price. A put options gives you the ability to sell the underlying asset at a specific price. You must understand the subtleties and challenges of both while doing stock options trading. Every strategy that you study from now on necessitates an understanding of the key features and differences between these two kinds of options.
