Office Sound Masking - Ensuring Workspace Privacy

By On September 30, 2008 Under Business

In the busy world of business today, communication seems to be more important than ever. Although important, it could be viewed as bothersome as well. As we take an open office plan for example. The conversation is not only heard by those who need to hear some form of particular communication, but is also heard by those who have no direct need for it. This leads to more noise, and dramatically less productive individuals.

Because the majority of tasks call for concentration and not just collaborating and interacting with other employees, companies should be sure to put in sound masking systems so that people only have to listen to what they are meant to hear. The term for this is “speech privacy.” Speech privacy necessitates superior workplace sound masking.

On-site management sometimes use sound insulation providers to integrate insulation into their existing structures in order to protect their employee’s speech privacy, which promotes a healthy work environment.

But the products that are offered now a days are much different from those that were used some years before. Even office sound masking systems which were used just a few years ago have become outdated now. These days, there are many different system types as well as manufacturers. Currently, the most effective and least-expensive sound masking systems are known as “direct-field” systems.

One of the criteria that a manager must consider when picking out a sound masking system is the superior quality of the sound he’s buying. Nearly all office sound masking businesses have demo on their products. They also offer access to a walk through for customers. Take full advantage of this; older “indirect field” systems need fine tuning and ongoing maintenance, so they don’t often produce relaxing sounds.

The easy part is the effective sound masking. The ideal systems for this will give effective speech privacy along with a tranquil work environment. For example, you may use a working lawn mower to give speech privacy, but this is certainly not a nice sound to hear!

Before sealing the deal, you must be sure to listen to the sound. Always get a masking system which will give a soft, non-directional, consistent sound and has no identifiable loops or repeats. Pick one that has multiple channels instead of an older-style mono system.

If you decide to purchase an outdated system, you will have to consider the costs of continued maintenance and repairs. Indirect field systems need recalibration whenever the furniture is moved, and usually require at least annual calibrations. New direct-field units do not require this kind of continued maintenance.

Privacy of speech is essential to promoting confidence in the workplace, and sound masking is essential to privacy. Facility managers often use office sound masking providers in order to integrate these structures into businesses, intending to allow for speech privacy. Among the criteria the manager should consider when choosing an audio masking program is the superior audio quality he is purchasing. The ideal masking systems will give effective privacy along with a tranquil work environment. Before finalizing the deal, you should make sure that you listen to the sound. Always go for a masking system that eliminates white noise and gives a soft, non-directional, consistent sound.
