By On September 28, 2007 Under Business

With the massive growth of online shopping and e-commerce it seems like half the websites you visit these days have a shopping cart icon on them. It’s sobering to remember that this type of business was almost unheard of in the early 1990’s. So many people have started their own online retail businesses from their homes or small offices that consumers now have a ever increasing level of choice of where to buy.

New businesses have sprung up to cater to the needs of these new start-ups. The entrepreneur in the field of internet selling is faced with almost as much choice in how to create their business as the customers they are trying to sell to. Finding a website host who can provide a reliable service at an acceptable cost is only one challenge. There is a bewildering number of such providers to choose between.

The so-called store-front is of really vital to an online business. This consists of the collection of webpages that those interested in your products will view over the internet and where they will hopefully fill up their shopping cart with everything you have on offer. Setting all this up is easy for the multitude of website designers who have decided to set up their own online retail business.

To set up your ecommerce website is a real headache if you are not aware of the complexities of HTML, Java and other jargon of the internet design industry .Some companies offers everything needed by a new online business at a monthly set price but this is not a good option as every business is unique and a single product cannot cater the needs of everyone’s needs.

Storefront software packages are available that new business can use to create their own websites using more or less friendly interfaces. Templates are provided with these packages which, with a little practice, can be modified by the user to create customised and professional looking pages. These website can then be hosted from the business’ own server.

Certain golden rules of marketing take a lot of work to satisfy using this method, however. Creating a cohesive ‘feel’ to your website by standardising the look of each page is important to establish a brand and create trust in the consumer and encourage them to fill up that shopping cart. It is also important to be able to easily modify the look and content of the website to reflect changing product lines and other factors such as seasonal market changes.

Regardless of whether you build your website yourself, or engage others to do it for you, it needs to be set up optimally for web search engines. Almost all of your customers will find you through the means of search engines, so it is essential to have a good page rank. You also need to make sure your ‘meta’ - the short description people see as part of each search result - is designed to attract customers to your site.

Majority of websites have an icon of shopping cart which was uncommon during 1990. This is due to massive development of ecommerce websites. Buyer’s choices are many on internet. When a customer visits your website he goes through many pages of your site. One has to be a master of internet software programming to set up a successful business site. It is also essential to meet with all needs of a prospective customer. All pages should be attractive such that online shopper fills his cart with items offered online. Installation of proper storefront software is essential. Site should be optimized for major internet search engines for easy approach online.
