In a show of support, friends of an expectant couple joined their efforts to provide shelter and others basic needs as a fire destroyed their home and took all their belongings mere days before the birth. We chose to offer a giftbasket and I had the responsibility of coming up with interesting gifsbasket ideas for the baby.
Because another friend of mine was donating a large supply of lightly-used rompers, sleepers, and coats, I decided that my friends would probably find a baby travel-kit most useful. I found my list of baby shower gift ideas and narrowed down the items to a short list.
They would need travel clothes for the baby. This included an easy-to-remove gown for sleeping and a bodysuit for the baby’s more active hours. And the baby would need outerwear. So I included a soft hat to keep that sure-to-be bald head warm, soft shoes, and a matching blanket. All of this needed to be in easily washable fabrics.
Babies eat frequently, and it’s usually a messy operation, so I included two terrycloth bibs and a soft washcloth. And all babies require toilet accessories, so I added two cloth diapers and two disposable ones. (Even the most environmentally conscious parent is sometimes going to find a use for disposable diapers.) I also included a couple of small dish-towels, to act as clothing protectors, when someone burped the baby. A small package of baby wipes is also a very good thing to have - so I included two.
All newborn baby gift baskets have to include a toy for the baby. I didn’t know the baby’s sex - our friends had wanted to find out when the child was born. So I had to pass up the stuffed truck and the rag doll. I chose instead a pale yellow stuffed duck.

Peel and de-vein your shrimp using a small paring knife fed through the back of the shrimp from the top to the tail (knife facing away from shrimp body and cutting through the shell) making it easy to open up the shell so your shrimp will pop right out! And save even more time, by purchasing the already peeled and de-veined frozen version.
Use about a teaspoon of butter and a teaspoon of extra-virgin olive oil in the bottom of a saute pan, add a clove or garlic (let’s be honest - we are not peeling and mincing our own garlic here, we are using a teaspoon of already chopped garlic in the jar), a half of finely chopped sweet onion, some salt and pepper, some parsley and your favorite seafood seasoning. You can just as easily wrap all of your ingredients in foil and pop on the grill or under the broiler for about 20 minutes for no-fuss cooking.
The shrimp should be served on a bed of wild rice cooked with chicken broth. Asparagus and tender baby portabella mushrooms, cooked together on the stove or over the grill with salt to taste and a dash of extra virgin olive oil, make an excellent side dish. These items combine to make a delicious dinner that is low in calories and quickly prepared (in no more than 45 minutes). Cleaning up shouldn’t be a problem either.
Seafood cooking with crab/shrimp/scallops is fun/easy/nutritious/low calories. Although clambake recipes and lobster recipes are good, they consume more time and money, which are precious for a working wife/mother. One would use a few favorite ingredients in any seafood recipes to give healthier/tastier food and they are amenable for grilling/sauteing/broiling. A pound of shrimp containing 26/27 pieces cost $8 and is sufficient for a family. Shrimps are peeled using a knife, remove the veins and open the shell. The ingredients used are butter/olive oil /clove/chopped garlic/onion/salt/pepper/parsley. Oil is heated on a saucepan and the ingredients with shrimp are wrapped in foil and grilled/broiled.
