Northern Virginia Homes For Sale: A Good Place For Your Family

Northern Virginia is renowned for its schools, both public and private. Fairfax County’s school system is the largest in Virginia, and its schools”"like Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology”"consistently rank among the very best. A number of colleges and universities also call Northern Virginia home, including George Mason University, Mary mount University, and Northern Virginia Community College, while institutions like Virginia Tech and the University of Virginia provide local satellite campuses to graduate and part-time students.

The school systems of Northern Virginia have a very good reputation. The public schools such as Fairfax County’s are among the largest and best in the country. Colleges and Universities also abound in the area, and names such as George Mason University and Marymount are nationally known for their academic programs, and not just sports teams. Reston Virginia Tech has local campuses for the convenience of residents.

Lots of northern Virginia single family houses and condominium townhouses which are currently on the market are up for purchase in this vicinity. Since there are four thousand miles of excellent highways here, numerous commuters escape the traffic jams by traveling via the D.C. subway (with 86 stations and more than 100 miles of track), and the Virginia Railway Express. Northern Virginia is also home to a pair of sizable airports: Reagan Washington National Airport, for domestic travel, and Dulles International Airport, for overseas trips.

Northern Virginia has a strong tourist industry, because of its many attractions and its nearness to Washington, DC. One sight-seeing tour that many people take starts at Mount Vernon and visits the Arlington National Cemetery. Then the tour crosses the Potomas river into Washington to visit the Lincoln Memorial, the National Zoo, the Washington Monument, the White House, and some of the 18 Smithsonian museums. Many of the people who visit these tourist attractions decide to stay in the area and buy real estate in northern Virginia.

On occasion someone will ask me for advice on touring the Civil War battlefields in or near Virginia. Not knowing people’s interests and situation it’s always tough to give that sort of advice, but I’ll give it a shot. Firstly and most importantly, do plenty of research before you go. You can’t do enough research. Park service interpretation can range from excellent to non-existent, and you won’t know for sure until you get there.

We can gain insight by looking at averages but there are inherent issues with averaging. What we don’t know is how the mix of properties sold is changing. This fact is a bit hard to get but from anecdotal observations we know that the higher end homes (above $800,000) are selling at a significantly slower rate than those less than $800,000.
